Revisiting Shingle Style: SMA's Defining Characteristics

Greenwich, Connecticut, offers a captivating landscape for new and prospective homeowners. As one of the largest coastal communities in Fairfield County, the town has held tremendous architectural influence–including the emergence of the Shingle Style.

Originating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Shingle Style was a departure from Victorian architecture. It embraced simplicity, asymmetry, and coastal charm. As a tribute to this timeless style, we invite you to explore our array of Shingle Style projects at Steven Mueller Architects.

The Enduring Appeal of Shingle Style

At SMA, our Shingle Styles have a blend of traditional and contemporary allure. Each featured project boasts common exterior characteristics, from shingle siding to wide porches, verandas, chimneys and stone foundations.

Traditional Shingle Style - Greenwich, Connecticut

SMA’s mid-country Shingle Style Residence is located on a one-acre site in Greenwich, Connecticut. The residence’s exterior embodies traditional design, achieved through the incorporation of features like a gable roof with long slopes, stone chimney masses, hipped-roof dormers, wood shingle siding, wood shingle roof, and multi-light sash windows.

Coastal Shingle Style - Old Greenwich, Connecticut

Nestled in Old Greenwich along Shore Road, we find our "Coastal Shingle Residence," a quintessential example of coastal architecture. The symmetrical design harmonizes with the evolving street architecture, featuring strong matching light, filled hipped tower, and a raised eyebrow entryway. The windows and doors follow a theme of simplicity with minimal embellishments.

Country Shingle Style - Greenwich, Connecticut

SMA's 7,500-square-foot Country Shingle Style is located on a half-acre site in downtown Greenwich, Connecticut. Built with the homeowner's needs in mind, this residence showcases a classic and asymmetrical design. The interior mirrors exterior design, with the earth-tone color schemes and the incorporation of wood elements, including a white oak floor with an ebony finish.

Coastal Shingle Style - Old Greenwich, Connecticut

This 6,500 square foot "Coastal Shingle Style Residence" is located in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. In addition to the prominent chimneys, porch style, and exterior columns, this project aimed to maximize the surrounding coast. Central to the design of this residence is the core three-story foyer and atrium. This space provides circulation to all floors, including the roof balcony, while providing natural light and a panoramic view of the Old Greenwich Shoreline, Greenwich Cove, and The Long Island Sound.
